Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) – Dr Chanchal Sharma
What is PCOS?
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder, a metabolic disorder of the endocrine system among women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS may have higher levels of male hormone (androgen), and prolonged or frequent menstrual periods. Numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) may also build up in the ovaries, and because of this, the ovaries may fail to release eggs on a regular basis.
The ovaries may also develop small cysts because of PCOS. The doctors do not know the exact cause of PCOS. Long-term complications such as heart disease or type 2 diabetes can be avoided with early diagnosis and treatment.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) could grow worse into a dangerous condition because it is a metabolic disorder. And that is why an early diagnosis and treatment can save the patient from many complications.
Obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and endometrium-related problems are among the complications that a severe PCOS condition may render. It can also cause other problems, such as excessive hair growth or hair thinning, and acne.

Causes of Polycystic ovary syndrome?
The causes of PCOS aren’t known exactly. But the following factors may contribute to this condition.
> Genes: Some researches show a link between PCOS and genes. So, there is also a possibility of its being genetic. Genes can affect one’s metabolic system of the endocrine.
> Insulin in excess: The pancreas produces insulin hormone that helps the body regulate blood sugar levels. If the body cells become resistant to the function of insulin, the blood sugar levels rise. Because of the rising blood sugar levels, the pancreas releases more insulin. Insulin in excess may be responsible for the increased levels of androgen production, which may cause troubles with ovulation.
> Androgen in excess: The ovaries produce androgen (a male hormone) in excess, which can disturb ovulation and also cause acne and hirsutism.
> Low-grade inflammation: It is the production of certain substances by the white blood cells in order to fight infection. In some research, women with PCOS have been found with low-grade inflammation that stimulates polycystic ovaries to release androgens, which may cause blood vessels and heart problems.
