Ayurveda

The science of Ayurveda is around more than 5000 years old. The word Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word meaning “knowledge of life”. It emphasizes on physical and mental health and aims to keep the body in harmony with the external world. Ayurvedic text defines its principle through the given verse.

स्वस्थस्य स्वास्थ्य रक्षणं, आतुरस्य विकार प्रशमनं (maintaining the health of a healthy person and curing the diseased)

Ether, fire, air, water and earth are the five basic elements that govern the body. These five elements are grouped into three doshas i.e vata, pitta and kapha. The balance of these doshas is important to keep the body healthy.

Ayurveda believes that everything we experience physically, emotionally etc has certain qualities. The ayurvedic treatment depends upon the vitiation of the dohas as the aggravated doshas lead to disease. These three doshas shapes our nature and is responsible for individuals characteristic of mind and body.

The cause of every disease is poor metabolism. Thus agni plays a major role in digesting the toxins. Weak agni leads to poor digestion and hence this results in accumulation of toxins and blocking the body channels. On the basis of these basic principles Ayurveda offers preventive wellness programs that is highly individualistic. There are eight branches of Ayurveda that guides us towards the preventive care and treatment of diseases. The eight branches are as follows –

1) Kayachikitsa (Internal medicine)
2) Baalachikitsa (Pediatrics)
3) Shalakya tantra (ENT)
4) Shalya tantra (Surgery)
5) Bhuta vidya (Psychiatry)
6) Agadtantra (Toxicology)
7) Rasayana (Geriatrics and Rejuvenation)
8) Vajikarana (Aphrodisiac therapy)

Ayurveda also offers one of the best detoxification therapy known as panchakarma. The five methods under panchakarma aims to eliminate the accumulated toxins from the minute body channels thus balancing the doshas and keeping the body in harmony with the nature.

Ayurveda thus addresses the body, mind and spirit. The ayurvedic science believes that each person responds differently to all the aspects of life. If you want to experience Ayurveda consult a certified ayurvedic doctor.
