Infertility in females due to blocked fallopian tubes and Ayurvedic treatment
Giving birth to a child is like a physical and emotional journey that every woman wants to experience. But infertility can act as a barrier and stop this journey before it starts. Then, the couple’s beautiful dream of having a child might seem to be turning into a nightmare.
If a woman’s fallopian tubes are damaged or blocked, it may cause infertility. Infertility is when a woman fails to conceive for at least a year. Behind the woman’s failure of conception could also be the male’s infertility.
What are fallopian tubes and their functions?
Fallopian tubes play a vital part in reproduction. Uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and vagina are a female’s internal reproductive organs. It is at the cervix that both vagina and the uterus connect. Further, the uterus connects to the ovaries through the fallopian tubes.
The uterus, also called the womb, functions to house and to nourish a fertilized egg. It is in the uterus the fertilized egg gradually turns into a baby up to the time of delivery. But the eggs are not produced in the uterus. They are produced in the ovaries. And the fallopian tubes play a vital role in bringing the eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. Isn’t female reproductive system interesting?

How do damaged or blocked fallopian tubes cause infertility?
For pregnancy to take place, it is important for the egg to reach the uterus, and second it is important for the sperm to penetrate the egg. And the damaged or blocked fallopian tubes can obstruct these two functions, which could result in infertility.
However, if only one tube is blocked, conception can still take place as the other tube can successfully deliver the egg to the uterus. In this case, if needed, medication can also help strengthen the rate of fertility.
What causes tubal blockage?
You might be thinking what are the causes of the blockage in the fallopian tubes? There is not a single cause but a few, which are:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)—there are many types of bacteria that can cause PID but the most common are gonorrhea and Chlamydia infections. Bacteria can easily enter the reproductive tract if the protective barrier created by the cervix is somehow disturbed.
The PID infection can cause scarring and swelling of the tissues. If the infection reaches the fallopian tubes, because of the scarring and swelling the tubes may get blocked or damaged.
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)—STIs can also cause infertility if left untreated. As the infection can spread to further areas of the reproductive system, the fallopian tubes may be damaged or blocked.
- Fibroids—fibroids can also block the fallopian tubes. They are usually muscle cells that build up in or around the fallopian tubes. They can also obstruct the blood flow to the uterus. It is not that fibroids will always cause infertility. Despite having fibroids, many women get pregnant and also safely deliver babies. In some cases, they can cause infertility.
- Endometriosis—the condition in which the uterus lining expands excessively in the areas of the pelvis, tubes and ovaries. This overgrowth of the lining may block the tube.
- Past ectopic pregnancy—in ectopic pregnancy the fertilized egg establishes itself outside the main cavity of the uterus. It may remain stuck in the fallopian tube without reaching its main destination. It develops a risk of blockage in the tube.
- Past abdominal surgery—unsafe abortion and abdominal surgery are also risk factors for tubal infertility.
