What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a disorder in which endometrium-like tissues grow outside the uterus. But what is endometrium? The uterine wall has three layers; the perimetrium, the myometrium and the endometrium. The perimetrium is the outer layer. The myometrium is the middle layer, which is made up mostly of smooth muscle. And the endometrium is the last one, which is made up of glandular cells and makes secretions.
The endometrium has a basal layer and a functional layer. Each month, the functional layer thickens under the influence of estrogen and is shed during menstruation. Endometriosis is when endometrium-like tissues are seen outside the uterus such as in the ovaries or the fallopian tubes. These displaced tissues respond like the endometrium tissues but their blood does not go out.
This trapped blood further causes inflammation, scarring, adhesions and other issues. Endometrium can also grow into the muscle layer of the uterus (the myometrium). This condition is diagnosed as adenomyosis.

Endometriosis symptoms
Endometriosis symptoms can vary from person to person. But the most common complaint is pelvic pain. Depending on the location, people can have a range of symptoms and problems. Possible symptoms are:
- Infertility
- Digestive problems such as diarrhea, bloating, nausea and constipation\
- Feeling pain in bowel movement during periods
- Feeling pain in urination during periods
- Pain when having sex and after it
- Pelvic pain
- Chronic pain in the lower back or pelvis
- Intestinal pain
- Spotting between periods
- Excessive pain during periods
Causes of endometriosis
The causes of endometriosis are unknown. But a few that are expected to cause this condition are:
- Tissue implantation due to a surgery. Any surgery done in the area of the female reproductive system may be responsible for placing the endometrium tissues in other unrelated areas.
- Disharmony in the immune system. A weak immune system can also be responsible for the problems of the body.
- Hormonal imbalance. Hormones play a vital role in the growth of tissues. Hormonal imbalance can also disturb the growth of tissues in the female reproductive system.
- Transport of endometrium tissues. It is also said that there is a possibility of transport of endometrium tissues to other places by tissue fluid or blood vessels.
- Retrograde menstruation. Each month, during menstruation, blood comes out of the body through the vagina. But in retrograde menstruation, blood flows into the opposite direction to the pelvis cavity. (Read More – Endometriosis: mostly asked questions and Endometriosis Ayurvedic treatment)
Endometriosis causes infertility
It is said that with mild endometriosis, women still have fair chance of getting pregnant. But a severe case of endometriosis can cause difficulties in pregnancy as the fallopian tubes may get blocked. Ovaries may also get damaged.
Diagnosis and endometriosis treatment
For the diagnosis, the doctor will ask you a few things about your pain and when it occurs. Then any of the tests could be suggested:
- Ultrasound. This test creates images of the inside of the body by using high-frequency sound waves. To get the images, transducer, a device, is either inserted through the vagina or pressed against the abdomen.
- Pelvic exam. In this test, the doctor manually feels the areas in the pelvis to detect any abnormalities.
- Laparoscopy. In this test, a tiny incision is made near the navel to insert a laparoscope to have a view of the inside with a camera.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI is helpful in giving detailed images of the tissues and organs. It uses radio waves and a magnetic field to create the images.
