An overview of Ayurveda
Ayurveda is one of the oldest medicinal systems in the world. The word Ayurveda is a combination of two Sanskrit words ‘ayus’ and ‘veda’. ‘Ayus’ means longevity and ‘veda’ means knowledge. Ayurveda is a holistic medicinal system which means it takes care of the body, mind and soul.
As per ayurvedic belief, the body is made of five basic elements: earth, fire, water, space and air. And these elements combine in the body and form three life energies or forces called doshas: vata, pitta and kapha. These doshas control how the body works.
Ayurveda believes that cleansing the basic elements of the body and keeping the doshas in balance make the body healthy and the mind peaceful. Ayurveda knows how to enhance the healing power of the body through detoxification, dietary changes, therapies, herbal medicines, yoga and meditation.
Ayurveda can treat many diseases, for instance, infertility, PCOS, PID, blood pressure, diabetes, stress, hydrosalpinx and many more.
What is hydrosalpinx?
Hydro means water, and salpinx means tube. Hydrosalpinx is a condition in which water/fluid takes place in the fallopian tube and causes a blockage. The fallopian tubes connect the ovaries to the uterus. The fallopian tube collects eggs from the ovary and delivers them to the uterus. If a tube is blocked due to hydrosalpinx, it cannot deliver the egg to the uterus.
This condition may cause infertility. However, pregnancy can take place through the other tube, but the hydrosalpinx tube may still cause issues in the pregnancy, like, fluid may travel down to the uterus and harm the growing egg in the uterus. There is also a risk of infection to the baby due to hydrosalpinx.
Mostly, it is the fallopian tube where an egg gets fertilized by sperm. If both the tubes have hydrosalpinx, pregnancy is almost impossible. Hydrosalpinx also increases the risk of an ectopic pregnancy.
An ectopic pregnancy is when a fertilized egg fails to reach and uterus and starts developing in the fallopian tube. Due to an ectopic pregnancy, the fallopian tube is at risk because it cannot function like the uterus. The uterus is the right place for the baby to grow.
Causes of hydrosalpinx
It is mostly an old, untreated infection that is responsible for it. Other reasons that may cause hydrosalpinx or tubal blockage are:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Sexually transmitted disease
- Previous surgery
- A prior ectopic pregnancy
- Endometriosis
- Fibroids
- Adhesions of the pelvis
Fimbriae, fingers-like projections, at the end of the fallopian tubes may get tangled and close off due to infection or another reason. Due to this, the tube may retain water and become blocked.
Symptoms of hydrosalpinx
Hydrosalpinx is a condition that shows no symptoms. However, some patients suffer chronic pain in the pelvis. Worse pain during periods or an ectopic pregnancy could indicate that there is something wrong inside the uterus or in the fallopian tubes.
How to diagnose it?
Diagnosis of hydrosalpinx is done through the following tests:
- Laparoscopy: This test is done by using a laparoscope in order to get a real-time view of the uterus and the fallopian tubes. A laparoscope is inserted through a tiny incision made in the belly.
- An ultrasound: An ultrasound test uses high-frequency radio waves to provide images of the inside. The size of a fallopian tube can be seen in an ultrasound. An enlarged fallopian tube may indicate hydrosalpinx.
- Hysterosalpingogram (HSG): A special liquid with sterile air is sprayed into the uterus of the patient through the cervix (the neck of the womb). And x-ray imaging is used to monitor the flow of the dye. If the dye does not pass through a fallopian tube, it will indicate a blockage.

In allopathic treatment, the main treatment suggested by doctors is surgery, followed by IVF. Hydrosalpinx tube is repaired or completely removed by a surgeon; whereas, ayurvedic treatment is done with herbs and therapies, and it is safe in many ways with little or no side effects.
