What is low AMH?
The table below shows the value of the AMH hormone as per the age of women.
Age | Value |
Less than 2 years | Less than 5 ng/ml |
2 to 12 years | Less than 10 ng/ml |
13 to 45 years | 1 to 10 ng/ml |
More than 45 years | Less than 1 ng/ml |
To find out low AMH levels, a blood test is done. This test is not done to find out the quality of the eggs, for that, the eggs have to be taken out as samples and tested in a laboratory. The results of the AMH are evaluated as per the age of the patient. It is said that the AMH levels go too low or even undetectable at the time of menopause.
What are the functions of the AMH?
- In males—it prevents the formation of the Mullerian ducts and the female reproductive tract.
- In females—it is helpful in the assessment of certain conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome and premature ovarian failure. The formation of primary follicles in a female’s ovaries is also inhibited. During the recruitment stage of folliculogenesis, it remains present in a higher quantity.
What can be the causes of low AMH?
The AMH levels in women go down after certain age and it is natural. But, there can also be an irregular decline in the AMH levels, which can also cause premature menopause. The following causes could be responsible for low AMH levels.
- Wrong lifestyle habits. In a few past decades, the lifestyle of people has had a tremendous change from eating habits to changes in the environment. People are attracted to those types of food that are tasty but not healthy. And the environment has also got polluted in many ways such as water pollution, air pollution, and excessive use of pesticides in vegetables and grains. These factors can enhance the levels of toxins in the body and can also cause hormonal imbalance.
- Autoimmune diseases. The body is designed to locate and destroy harmful cells, parasites and harmful foreign bacteria and viruses. Under the influence of autoimmune diseases, the body harms or kills its healthy cells. This condition can cause harm to even the cells or tissue in the reproductive organs, which may further cause the levels of the AMH to decline.
- Endometriosis. This condition could also have a negative impact on the AMH levels. Endometriosis is when the endometrial-like tissues are found outside the uterus such as in the fallopian tube or the ovaries. These tissues can cause inflammation to the surrounding organs and also impact the AMH levels negatively.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a condition in which the ovaries produce an abnormal amount of a male hormone, called androgen. The multiple cysts in this condition can cause the AMH levels to decline.
- Genes. Genes play a huge role in the structure of the body and the hormonal system. Several conditions could pass through the genes to the next generation. The irregularity of the AMH could be one of them.
- Cancers. Certain cancers such as ovarian cancer or cervical cancer may influence the AMH levels negatively. Even the treatment of cancer could cause the AMH levels to decline.
What could be the symptoms of low AMH levels?
A few signs could be observed but you should understand that these signs do not exactly indicate the low AMH levels. This condition could be totally asymptomatic. But if you spot the following symptoms, you may consult a doctor.
- Short menstruation cycles
- Irregular menses
- Permanent cessation of the periods (menopause)
It is not like you cannot get pregnant if your AMH levels are low. As per the quality of the egg, you can still become pregnant with low levels of AMH. But the low levels of the AMH could be alarming for your future, for you may have early menopause. If you have no plan to get pregnant in the future, you do not have to worry at all about it.
