Male Infertility: Symptoms and Causes – Dr Chanchal Sharma
What is Male Infertility?
Infertility in males is called Male Infertility. If a male partner has failed to start a pregnancy in his female partner for more than one year and the causes of this failure lie in the male, not in the female, then the male partner may be infertile.
In order to achieve a pregnancy, both partners should be fertile. If any one of them is infertile, conception will not take place. A woman can be infertile, or a man can also be infertile. When a woman fails to get pregnant, in many societies, attention directly goes to the woman as she has to nurture and deliver the baby. But, it is also possible that she may not be getting pregnant because of her male partner’s infertility.
An infertile male partner fails to make his female partner pregnant even after several attempts over several months. If a couple has failed to achieve a pregnancy for one or more years, both partners should visit the doctor and share the problem so that the doctor can find out in which partner lies the causes of this problem.

The health and quality of sperm play a crucial role in male fertility. There are several factors that are connected to the sperm of a man. Those are:
Sperm motility: It is sperm that has to reach the egg for fertilization. And that is why sperm motility plays a key role in fertilization. Ayurvedic treatment for sperm motility is also an effective way to boost fertility.
Sperm count: A low sperm count may cause infertility issues. What is considered a normal sperm count falls between15 million sperm and more than 200 million sperm per millimeter of semen.
Semen volume: Semen volume is the fluid from prostrate and the other sex glands. It is helpful in taking sperm out of the man’s body during sex. This fluid also helps sperm reach the egg cell through the female reproductive tract.
Sperm morphology: The shape and structure of sperm are also analyzed for infertility. Better shapes and structures tend to have higher fertility rates.
Male Infertility Causes
Several health issues or medical conditions can cause problems with male fertility.
- Infections. Some infections can be harmful to the production or health of sperm. Some infections can also cause scarring that may cause blockages in the passage of sperm. These infections include inflammation of the testicles (orchitis) or the epididymis (epididymitis) or sexually transmitted infections, including HIV or gonorrhea.
- Varicocele. Varicocele is the swelling of the veins within the scrotum (the sac that holds testicles). Although, the reason of infertility caused by varicocele is unknown. This condition may reduce the quality and quantity of sperm.
- Antibodies that harm sperm. There are anti-sperm antibodies for the immune system cells that mistakenly take sperm cells as harmful invaders and try to remove them.
- The issues of ejaculation. There are also ejaculation issues that could create problems with sperm. Retrograde ejaculation is one of them. It is when sperm enters the bladder instead of coming out of the penis during orgasm. Health conditions that may contribute to retrograde ejaculation are spinal certain medicines, injuries, diabetes and surgery of the urethra, prostate or bladder.
- Hormonal imbalance. Abnormality of the hormonal system, such as thyroid, pituitary, adrenal glands or hypothalamus may also affect a man’s infertility. Other hormonal problems including low testosterone can also harm a man’s fertility.
- Tumors. Nonmalignant tumors and cancers can affect the glands that are involved in reproduction. In some cases, chemotherapy, radiation or surgery to treat tumors can also lead to infertility.
- Undescended testicles. During the development period in the womb, one or both testicles do not descend into the sac (that contains the testicles) from the abdomen. Men with Undescended testicles are more likely to have infertility issues.
- Tubal defects. If there are defects in the tubes that carry sperm, there is a possibility of infertility. The conditions that can affect the motility of sperm in those tubes are surgery, injury, blockage, abnormal development or trauma.
- Some other conditions. Some other conditions may involve celiac disease, chromosome defects, problems with sex postures and sexual intercourse.
