What is Panchakarma Therapy?
Panchakarma is one of the several methods of treatment in Ayurveda. Panchakarma is a Sanskrit word which means “five actions or steps”. The 5 steps of panchakarma are:
- Virechana: purgation
- Vamana: therapeutic vomiting
- Nasya: nasal irrigation
- Basti: medicated oil enemas
- Raktamokshana: blood cleansing
Originally, these were the five classical elements that panchakarma included. But with time, panchakarma has also gone through several modifications across India. For obvious reasons, some other treatments have also been added to it. A panchakarma therapy today may include the following treatments:
- Cleansing enemas
- Medicated (herbal) oil massages
- Steam baths
- Laxatives
- Nasal administration
- Specialized diet
Whatever benefits were derived from the original elements of panchakarma are still the base of the modern-day Panchakarma Therapy. Modifications have taken place in order to provide the patients more benefits.

AN OVERVIEW OF PANCHAKARMA
Pre-panchakarma process
Oleation and fomentation are two pre-panchakarma processes.
- Oleation. In this process, oils which have been selected as per your treatment needs are applied on your body. In internal oleation, the patient is given ghee or medicated oil to drink until a specific period. This therapy may be on for 3 to 7 days.
In external oleation, the patient is given massage for 30 to 90 minutes with medicated oils. The massage time may also vary.
- Fomentation. After oleation comes fomentation. The body is induced to sweat by using different methods. It is helpful in opening the pores of the skin. It also enhances the agni, which helps in burning the extra fat and removing toxins in sweat.
