Is it possible to get pregnant with blocked fallopian tubes?
Fallopian tubes, also called fallopian ducts, are narrow tubes that join the ovaries and the uterus. The ovaries, fallopian tubes and the uterus have their roles to play in pregnancy. Ovaries create eggs (called ovum). Each month, an ovum passing through the fallopian tube reaches the uterus.
The egg sticks to the wall of the uterus (the endometrium). If it is fertilized, it begins to grow in the uterus; otherwise, it is shed along with the endometrium in periods. When sperm fertilizes an egg, it is usually in the fallopian tube. The egg passes through the fallopian tube slowly. If it receives sperm, it gets fertilized.
There is a possibility of get pregnant with blocked fallopian tubes. If only one tube is blocked, there is still a chance of getting pregnant with one fallopian tube. In this case, the doctor may also suggest fertility pills that can help the woman getting pregnant.
There are also other treatments that can help a woman with blocked fallopian tubes get pregnant.
What is the role of fallopian tubes in pregnancy?
In a natural pregnancy, the fallopian tubes play an important role. They transport the egg to the uterus. The egg is meant to grow in the uterus. Without fallopian tubes, it would be very hard for the egg to reach the uterus.
If there is a blockage, cut or any other obstruction in the fallopian tube, the egg may implant itself in the fallopian tubes. And because of this, pregnancy in the fallopian tube may take place. It is called an ectopic pregnancy and is dangerous to both, the mother and the baby.
Therefore, it seems necessary for the tubes to be healthy (without any blockage) in order to deliver the egg safely into the uterus.

Blocked fallopian tubes symptoms
There are usually no symptoms of blocked fallopian tubes. In Hydrosalpinx—a tubal blockage condition due to fluid in the tubes—women often complain of pain. Fallopian tube pain can be observed in this. Because tubal blockage is asymptomatic, many women get to know about it after consulting a doctor about their not getting pregnant.
However, no symptoms can exactly point out that the fallopian tubes are blocked. But, if you notice the following symptoms, you should consult a doctor.
- Feeling pain during urination (during periods)
- Feeling pain during bowel movement (during periods)
- Spotting between menstrual cycles
- Pain while having sex
- Painful periods
- Usual pain in the lower abdomen or in the pelvis
- Digestive system-related problems
- Intestinal pain
Blocked fallopian tube causes
A few conditions that could cause a blockage in the fallopian tube are listed below:
- Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Fallopian tubes may also be harmed by sexually transmitted diseases. The infection can cause inflammation or scar in the tube. Therefore, one must be careful of STDs and make safe sexual contact.
- An ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy takes place outside the uterus, usually in the fallopian tube. This pregnancy needs to be treated in time; otherwise, it may cause harm to the tube. An ectopic pregnancy increases the risk of another ectopic pregnancy in the future.
- Endometriosis. Endometrial-like cells can grow in or around the fallopian tubes causing a blockage.
- Pelvic adhesions. Scar tissues can also block the fallopian tubes. Scar tissues can be caused by surgery, an injury or an infection.

What are the tests to detect a tubal blockage?
- Laparoscopy. The surgeon makes a tiny cut on your belly to insert a tube in your uterus to detect any blockage. The tube has a camera called a laparoscope. It is a reliable test because the surgeon gets better details of the reproductive organs.
- An ultrasound. An Ultrasound creates images of the internal organs of the body. Its high-frequency sound waves create images on the screen. A transvaginal ultrasound can also be done. It is when the ultrasound is done by inserting the equipment in the uterus through the vagina.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This technique uses strong magnetic fields, magnetic field gradients and radio waves to create images.
- A sonohysterosalpingography. In this test, the doctor tries to detect any blockage in the fallopian tube by observing the flow of a special dye. This dye is inserted in the uterus by using sterile air. A transvaginal ultrasound is done simultaneously to observe this flow.
- Hysterosalpingogram (HSG). A special dye is also used in this test to observe its flow through the fallopian tubes. But rather than a transvaginal ultrasound, an X-ray is done to see the flow of the dye.
There are different types of treatment for helping the patient become pregnant. They are:
In-vitro fertilization (IVF). In this procedure, mature eggs are taken out from the ovaries and fertilized in a lab by sperm. Then, a fertilized egg is implanted in the uterus to grow.
Tubal ligation reverse surgery. Surgery is done to remove a blockage or reconnect the tubes by joining the cuts.
Fallopian tube recanalization (FTR). No surgery is needed for FTR. The doctor inserts a catheter into the tube through the vagina and cervix. A speculum is used to keep the vagina open. A contrast liquid is sprayed and an X-ray is done to find out the blockage. The doctor uses another catheter to remove the blockage.
