Successful pregnancy with hydrosalpinx
Is your fallopian tube blocked with fluid in it? It could be hydrosalpinx. Fallopian tubes are found on both sides of the uterus. If one side is blocked, you can become pregnant from the other tube, but having hydrosalpinx even at one side can still lower your chances of pregnancy.
If both fallopian tubes are blocked, the doctor will suggest IVF for pregnancy. But the possibility of IVF success will enhance only if you have had surgery to remove or disconnect hydro salpinges. Hydrosalpinx can cause infertility. Having hydrosalpinx on both sides reduces the success rates of IVF.
And surgery treatment also has its risks. But there is also a natural treatment for hydrosalpinx. Hydrosalpinx infertility treatment can also be done by an ayurvedic doctor.

What is hydrosalpinx?
Hydro means water or fluid, and salpinx means tube. It is a blockage of the fallopian tube with fluid in it. It does not stop the production and release of the eggs in the ovaries. It blocks the passage that the egg needs to reach the uterus. The blockage can also prevent sperm’s entry into the tube, not allowing sperm to penetrate the egg in the fallopian tube.
How does it cause infertility?
There is a procedure for pregnancy to occur in your reproductive system. Hydrosalpinx in both the tubes can obstruct this procedure, due to which infertility can take place. For pregnancy to take place, the ovary usually releases one egg each month. The egg is collected by fimbriae, finger-like projections at the end of the fallopian tube.
Then, the egg goes to the uterus through the fallopian tube. Sperm usually fertilizes the egg in the fallopian tube. So, the blockage can stop both; the meeting of the egg and sperm, and the movement of the egg to the uterus.
What are the causes of hydrosalpinx?
It is said that fimbriae can close off due to an infection (often long and untreated). And then, the collection of the fluid can take place in the tube. Doctors also talk about other causes that could cause hydrosalpinx. They are:
- Endometriosis
- Prior surgery in the uterus or fallopian tube
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Fibroids
- Scar tissue
- Pelvic adhesions
- An ectopic pregnancy
What are the symptoms of hydrosalpinx?
Symptoms can include pain in the lower abdomen or pelvic area, or vaginal discharge. But it can also exist without any symptoms. As it can cause infertility, women without symptoms can find out during their infertility treatment that they have hydrosalpinx.
How can you be diagnosed with hydrosalpinx?
Tests are there that are done to diagnose it. Your doctor will recommend you an appropriate test for its diagnosis.
- An ultrasound. Because of hydrosalpinx, the tube may swell up and increase in size. An ultrasound imaging, which uses high-frequency sound waves, can show the enlarged size of the tube.
- Hysterosalpingogram (HSG). To find out if there is a blockage in the tube, HSG can be done. A special dye is sprayed into the uterus through the cervix with sterile air. And to see how this dye is going through the fallopian tube, x-ray imaging is done.
- A sonohysterosalpingography. This test is almost the same as the HSG. But, in this test, a transvaginal ultrasound is done to see the blockage. In a transvaginal ultrasound, ultrasound equipment is inserted into the uterus through the cervix for taking images.
Laparoscopy: It is done through keyhole surgery. By making a small incision on the belly, the surgeon enters camera equipment to see the internal organs such as the ovaries, the fallopian tubes and the uterus.
Hydrosalpinx treatment
As already mentioned, if pregnancy is not taking place because of hydrosalpinx, the doctor can suggest IVF for pregnancy and can also recommend a surgical treatment for repairing or removing the hydrosalpinx tubes.
After surgery, the tube has very poor pregnancy rates. And the surgery also has the risk of scar tissue or adhesions. Some have successful IVF pregnancies; while, some may suffer immature birth or multiple pregnancies.
