Ayurvedic treatment for urinary tract infection (UTI)

Ayurvedic treatment for urinary tract infection (UTI)

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of the urinal passage. This infection can involve the ureters, urethra, kidneys and the bladder. Let’s understand something about the parts of the urinary system.

The kidneys are located above the hips, on the back of your body. The kidneys remove wastes from the body. They also remove extra fluid and acid produced by the cells of the body. They also play a role in maintaining a balance of salts, minerals, water, sodium, potassium, calcium and phosphorus in your body. The kidneys filter blood and collect water that has wastes of the body as urine.

Ureters play an important role in carrying urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Ureters are thin tubes.

A bladder is a sac-like container for urine. The bladder is a place where urine is stored from the kidneys.

The urethra is a thin tube to carry urine out of your body from the bladder.

You may have understood how every part of the urinal system plays an important role in filtering, storing and carrying urine out of the body.

Urinary tract infection causes

Anyone can suffer a urinary tract infection. It is more common in women than in men. That is because a woman’s urethra (the tube from the bladder to the point from where urine comes out of the body) is shorter than a man’s. And that is why it gets easier for bacteria to enter the bladder from the urethra.

And another reason is that a woman’s urethra is closer to the anus. And E. coli bacteria are commonly found in the anus. Microorganisms—usually bacteria—cause urinary tract infections. But urine does not usually have bacteria that can cause an infection. Germs usually enter from outside through the urethra. And the parts that are most commonly affected are the lower parts—the urethra and the bladder.

Things that can enhance the risk of infection entering the bladder through the urethra are:

  • Pregnancy
  • Having sex
  • Enlarged prostate and constipation (as they cause difficulties in fully emptying the bladder)
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Using chemicals to clean genitals
  • Not keeping the genitals dry and clean
  • Not changing the inner wear daily
  • A weak immune system or diabetes

Other benefits of ayurvedic treatment

  • No side effects—allopathy drugs often leave their side effects. But Ayurveda uses natural herbs that have no side effects if used properly.
