What is endometriosis?
The internal lining of the uterus is called endometrium. Endometrium is made of special cells that are called endometrial cells. It thickens in size, as it stores blood, and waits for a fertilized egg for pregnancy. When it does not receive a fertilized egg, it sheds its cells including the blood. This process is called menstruation or period.
Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrial cells begin to grow in those parts which are not meant for them (outside the uterus), for example, the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissues lining the pelvis. They can also affect the lower abdomen, bladder and rectum. But only in rare cases these tissues can be found beyond the area of the pelvic organs. This condition could be from mild to severe.

What are the causes of endometriosis?
The exact causes are still a subject of research. But there are some possible explanations. They are:
- Immune system disorder. The body may fail to detect and destroy the endometrial-like tissues that are building up out of the uterus.
- Post surgery implantation. Post surgery, surgery like C-section or hysterectomy, endometrial tissues may attach to the surgical incision.
- Retrograde menstruation. In this condition, the blood containing endometrial tissues flows backward into the pelvic cavity instead of coming out of the body. But it is common and could occur to some degree in some women.
- Hormonal imbalance. Hormonal imbalance could also be responsible for this as hormones play a vital role in the growth of cells.
- Endometrial tissue transport. Endometrial cells can also be transported to the other parts by the blood vessel or tissue fluid.
