What is Hydrosalpinx?
Hydrosalpinx is a condition in which fluid gets collected within the fallopian tube. Hydro refers to water and salpinx refers to the fallopian tubes. But where does this fluid come from? It is the fluid that flows through the fallopian tubes and its collection in the tube may cause swelling and tubal blockage. Then, there are chances of infertility.
The Possible Causes Of Infertility In Women
For your information, Hydrosalpinx is not the only one that could cause infertility in women. There are also other factors. You should also know about them; at least, in brief.
Failure to ovulate: failure to ovulate is one of the common causes of female infertility. There could be various causes for this such as:
- Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Imbalance of hormones due to endocrine disorders including problems with the hypothalamus and thyroid.
- Negative changes in lifestyle such as, taking unhealthy food, no or little physical exercise, smoking or consuming alcohol or excessive intake of caffeine.

Fallopian Tube Blockage
Some people wonder why fallopian tubes are blocked. There could be several reasons behind it. One of them is Hydrosalpinx as we have already discussed. Other causes are:
- Structural defects in the reproductive system: usually it is the presence of abnormal tissues in the uterus or fallopian tubes.
- Uterine fibroids: fibroids can also cause tubal blockage. They are noncancerous growths that build up in the uterus. Researchers do not exactly know what causes these growths.
- Endometriosis: the endometrium, the lining of the uterus begins to thicken up during a menstrual cycle in preparation for pregnancy. If the conception does not happen that month, the body sheds endometrium and this process begins over again. In endometriosis, the tissues which are alike endometrium begin to grow outside the lining of the uterus, and if they grow in or around the fallopian tubes, they might block them.
When eggs fail to mature: Not maturing of eggs may cause infertility. The causes that may obstruct eggs to mature are obesity, PCOS, or the lack of particular proteins that play an important part in eggs’ maturity.
As you have read, besides Hydrosalpinx, there are also other factors that can cause infertility. But, how can Hydrosalpinx be diagnosed?
Diagnosis of Hydrosalpinx
A few methods that the doctors use to diagnose Hydrosalpinx are:
- A sonohysterosalpingography: to detect any blockage in the fallopian tube, the doctor passes sterile air and saline fluid into the woman’s uterus through the cervix. At the same time, the doctor also does a transvaginal ultrasound to detect the blockage.
- Laparoscopic surgery: laparoscopic surgery is also known as keyhole surgery. In this surgery, the surgeon makes small incisions to insert a tube with a camera just to observe if there is any fluid in the tubes and removes it.
- An ultrasound: when we go on the results, an ultrasound is not considered an effective method to diagnose Hydrosalpinx. It is said that only around 34 percent of cases can be found successful in the diagnosis.
- Hysterosalpingogram (HSG): an X-ray is done to detect the blockage in the fallopian tube. A particular dye is also used through the cervix to find out any blockage or the possibility of any fluid
What Can Cause Hydrosalpinx?
The fallopian tubes contain glands that create a watery fluid. When this fluid is collected in the tube, it could cause Hydrosalpinx. However, the causes of Hydrosalpinx are still debatable. But the following factors may also contribute to it:
- Scarred appendicitis
- Abdominal surgery
- Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- Endometriosis

Most women are unaware of their condition until they begin to seek help for the issues that cause trouble in their conception. However, some common symptoms could be:
- The lower abdomen could have constant pain or ache
- The vaginal discharge could take place
- Pain may increase during or after the period
Surgical Treatment Of Hydrosalpinx
In some cases, surgical treatment can be given to the patient in order to remove the fluid and open the tubes. But some tubal surgeries could create further problems as they are risky. So before choosing the surgery, openly talk to your gynecologist about the pros and cons of the surgery. Risks that the surgery could involve are:
- Damage to nerves
- Adhesions
- Difficulties in passing urine
- Blood clots
- Potential damage to other organs of the reproductive system
